Indiana Fishing Report – June 12, 2020

Lake: Lake Michigan (boat)
Fishing report: The recent south winds really cleared the water up nearshore. Kings and coho have been hit or miss, with best action from Portage east to the Michigan state line in 40-80 feet of water, depending on the day. Anglers have reported lots of lake trout mixed in. Better numbers of skamania are showing up staging near Portage and Michigan City in 30 to 80 feet depending on the day. Several boats had good catches of steelhead trolling near the lighthouse in Michigan City. Orange and red spoons are standby lures for steelhead this time of year. Fish have been scattered so if you find a school it might be worth circling on it a few times before moving on to new water. Orange, blue, and green spoons on lead/copper lines, and downriggers with free sliders have been good for just about everything. Flasher/fly setups on wire dipsy divers have also produced. Few people have been out after yellow perch but they should start biting very soon, especially with some hot weather in the forecast next week. Remember to check the wave forecast before planning a trip – http://www.nws.noaa.gov/os/marine/gtlakes.htm. Click on the map of the USA to enlarge, and then click on the red dot near Chicago. Then select the area of the lake you are planning on fishing to obtain the local wave forecast.

Lake: Lake Michigan (shore)
Fishing report: Skamania continue to be caught in Michigan City Harbor, especially near the DNR building. The action has improved all week. Shimp and crawlers were doign well, but some anglers had success casting little cleos and KO wobblers in silver/blue, silver/green, and orange colors. Channel catfish and freshwater drum were also hitting pretty well.

Fishing report: Skamania are being caught in Trail Creek using shrimp, spawn, and spinners. With water temps still reasonable, Salt Creek and Little Cal will have fish too. With cold weather this weekend the creeks will be in great shape, and it’s likely a push of fish will head upstream.
