Report: Fishing license sales down in Illinois

As the DNR reminds us that hunting and fishing licenses expire at the end of this month, a report out of Springfield suggests fewer people have been paying for the right to fish.

“Fishing license sales have been either flat or declining in Illinois for the past 10 years,” the report by the Illinois News Network said.

Changing demographics is part of the reason for declining sales, INN noted, explaining that DNR Fisheries Chief Dan Stephenson blames the decrease on “younger people are not engaging in outdoor activities like older generations before them.”

“We’ve got what is called an R3 initiative,” Stephenson said. “It’s reactivation, retention and recruitment of anglers.”

While the DNR still sells up to 700,000 fishing licenses each year, the agency would like to push that number higher.
