St. Croix Rods opening factory to customers for tours starting June 1

Park Falls, Wis. — For the first time in many years, the St. Croix Rods Company will open its doors to its customers for tours beginning Wednesday, June 1.

Outdoor media members received a sneak peak of the factory tour on Tuesday, May 17 as part of the annual Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers Cast and Blast. The Mercer Chamber of Commerce and The Great Northern Motel, of Mercer, hosted this year’s Cast and Blast and, in setting up the event, Mercer’s Chamber of Commerce director, Tina Brunell, working with St.Croix’s Jeff Schluter, Rich Belanger, Jesse Simpkins and Ken Boness to put together a tour for more than 26 media types.

The tours are free and will begin at 10 a.m. each day of the summer, beginning on June 1. From June 1 through Sept. 30, the tours will run Monday through Friday. From Oct. 1 through April 14, the tours will run on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The shop is closed on all major holidays.

The tours last about 90 minutes. There are some limitations. There is a maximum of 10 persons allowed on each tour; there is a minimum of four persons required for a tour, said Boness, who also strongly suggests calling ahead to make reservations. No reservations will be accepted after 3 p.m. the day prior to the tour.

“The maximum number may be expanded to accommodate a group of more than 10 people, such as we did for AGLOW,” said Simpkins.

If St. Croix is not able to provide a tour on a particular day, a notice will be made 48 hours prior, said Boness. The tour is wheelchair accessible, but is not suitable for infants or toddlers, and protective eyewear must be worn.

“We provide the glasses,” said Boness, who is retiring from St. Croix shortly, but will return on a part-time basis to conduct the tours.
