Southern Wisconsin Fishing Report – January 22nd, 2016

In Sheboygan, the Sheboygan River has ice cover below the Kohler dam, but faster-moving stretches of water are still open near I-43 and Esslingen Park. There is ice right along the river bank in some areas, which could restrict fishing access in those locations. The river is partially open below the 8th Street bridge, but there are ice floes moving through that lower section of river as well. The harbor is iced over in portions of Harbor Centre Marina, and anglers have been seen fishing off of the docks.

The Port Washington harbor is open near the power plant discharge and in the north slip. Brown trout and occasional steelhead are being caught, and anglers have been using a variety of baits such as spawn, shiners, crankbaits, and plastics.

The lower Milwaukee River and Milwaukee harbor remain open and free of ice. Anglers fishing under the Hoan bridge and behind the Summerfest grounds have been catching occasional brown trout. The mouth of the Menomonee River stays open during the winter, and the MMSD office building provides good access for anglers looking to catch browns.

There is more ice in the area now, with total ice coverage on Kegonsa and Waubesa as of last week. No one has tried venturing out to the middle of either lake, though. Bluegills and pike have been hitting on Mud Lake. Guys were catching bluegills on Lake Monona’s Squaw Bay. Crappies and bluegills have been hitting near The Triangle. Cherokee Marsh is iced over and guys had a couple of good days here on nice bluegills.
