Catskills Fishing Report – January 22nd, 2016

It’s cold. It’s winter, and it’s finally acting like it. Most of the famed Catskill trout waters are closed to fishing; the rest are iced over and borderline unfishable at best. There are better options right now for the fly angler.

One is the Somerset, N.J., Fly Fishing Show, set for Jan. 29-31 at the Garden State Exhibit Center. Among the featured guests is fly-fishing legend Lefty Kreh, as well as Barry and Cathy Beck, Gary Borger, Ed Engle and more. Go online to the show website www.flyfishingshow.com for complete details.

Another special event is set for Feb. 6 at the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum in Livingston Manor. FlyFest, sponsored by Catskill Flies, is free and begins at 10 a.m. This annual event is a fine gathering for fly tiers to share some stories, techniques and new fly patterns. Everyone is welcome to come see this group in the warmth of the museum in a very casual setting. Shop or swap some flies, chat the tiers up or look over their shoulders.
