Northern Lower Peninsula Fishing Report – December 18th, 2015

NORTHWESTERN LP

Alanson

There was no ice in northwest Michigan last week. A few boat anglers were getting out and catching yellow perch on Burt Lake and in the Black River. Firearms deer season was slow, but some nice bucks were killed. Muzzleloader season was slow, too. The late grouse season has been slow, with hunting pressure light.

Traverse City Area

There was no sign of ice in the northern Lower Peninsula last week. Steelhead fishing has been decent on the Boardman and Elk rivers. Wax worms and spawn are both producing fish. A few boat anglers have been catching good numbers of perch on Long Lake. The firearms deer season was slow in Grand Traverse County,  and muzzleloader season was slow, too. Late grouse season has been slow.

Cadillac Area

The night bite from walleyes has been very good in the canal between lakes Cadillac and Mitchell. Gold/blue crankbaits have produced the best results. Rock bass are hitting in the open water on Crystal Lake, and perch are hitting on Portage Lake. The firearms deer season was mixed. Some areas produced decent results and hunting was slow in others. Muzzleloader season was slow. Late-season grouse hunting has been slow.

NORTHEASTERN LP

Grayling Area

A few anglers have been catching light numbers of walleyes on Lake Margrethe, when the wind allows them to get out. Firearms deer season was fair. Numbers were down, but some decent bucks were killed in the area. Muzzleloader season was fair. Grouse hunting has been slow.

Houghton Lake Area

A few anglers were catching decent numbers of walleyes from shore on Houghton Lake. The firearms deer season was hit or miss in Roscommon County. Warm weather kept deer movement to a minimum during the day.

Onaway Area

Fishing pressure has been a non-event on Black Lake. Anglers are waiting for cooler temperatures and ice. The firearms deer season was good in Presque Isle County with lots of quality bucks being taken. Muzzleloader season was slow.
