Northwest Pennsylvania Fish Report – December 4th, 2015

Lake Erie  — A few boaters were still on the lake earlier in November and reported smallmouth bass up to 7 pounds, limits of perch, and large catfish. Fishing out of North East, anglers reported smallmouth bass up to 2.5 pounds on drop-shot rigs in 30 to 35 feet and lake trout up to 10 pounds.

Presque Isle Bay (Erie County) — Smallmouth bass up to 3½ pounds were reported on crankbaits in recent weeks. Emerald shiners moved into the bay from the big lake in November. Anglers reported nice perch off the North and South piers and at the docks. Crappies and bluegills were reported in Marina Bay.

Lake Erie tributaries — When winds were calm, anglers caught nice numbers of big brown trout along the shoreline near the creek mouths, but flow in the tribs was very low. Steelhead were in the lower reaches, with just a few fish moving upstream. Low, clear conditions required single eggs and minnows or natural-color nymphs or sucker spawn.

French Creek (Erie, Mercer, Crawford, Venango counties) — Northern pike up to 30 inches were released on creek chubs. A few walleyes also were reported, with one 6-pounder landed on a large jerkbait.

Pymatuning Reservoir (Crawford County) — Walleyes up to 26 inches were reported in recent weeks, along with perch off the causeway. The walleyes were hitting blades on the south end. Crappies, including slabs, and bluegills were hitting off the docks, which are now open to anglers. Small jigs out-produced live minnows for some anglers, and the morning bite was better than the afternoon bite. Some perch also were reported.

Conneaut Lake (Crawford County) — Smallmouth bass up to 4 pounds, largemouth bass up to 3¾ pounds, and northern pike were reported, although some anglers reported constant snags on dying weeds were a problem.

Lake Justus (Venango County) — Numbers of stocked trout up to 16 inches and a few largemouth bass were reported, with the trout hitting a variety of baits, including crayfish jigs for one angler.

Allegheny River (Venango County) — Smallmouth bass were reported, mostly on tube jigs, although some anglers had success with bladebaits. One angler released close to a 20-inch smallmouth on a live creek chub. Northern pike up to 22 inches were reported, along with smaller-sized walleyes.

Shenango River Reservoir (Mercer County) — Limits of crappies on jigs were reported in recent weeks.

Lake Wilhelm (Mercer County) — A nice crappie bite was reported in recent weeks. Water levels were low because of maintenance on the dams.
