Northern Lower Peninsula Fishing Report – July 3rd, 2015

Indian River

Mayflies are hatching on inland lakes in the area, and fishing has slowed. A few walleyes and smallmouth bass have been caught on Burt and Mullett lakes. Stream fishing for brookies has been pretty good.

Traverse City Area

The hex hatch is on in northwestern Lower Michigan. Rain has delayed the hatch some, but fishing was still fair for brown trout last week on the Boardman and Big Manistee rivers. Good numbers of browns also are being caught in Lake Michigan at Frankfort by anglers casting off the piers or trolling around them. Fair numbers of walleyes and bass have been caught on Long Lake, where the mayfly hatch has been light.

Mio Area

The hex hatch is on, and anglers are catching good numbers of brown trout at night on the AuSable River. The best action has been above the Alcona and Mio ponds. Slate-winged olives and isos are producing good action between Mio and McKinley.

Houghton Lake Area

Walleye fishing is picking up on Houghton Lake. Crawler harnesses trolled or drifted in 6 to 8 feet of water along the weeds are producing good results. Pike fishing has been very good all over the lake. Panfish have moved off their beds and are hitting chunks of nightcrawlers and leaf worms fished along the weedlines.
