Northern Lower Peninsula Fishing Report – April 10th, 2015

Traverse City Area

Ice is shot on inland lakes in Grand Traverse County, and anglers are targetting steelhead in the Betsie and Boardman rivers. So far, action has been slow, but warm weather and rain in the forecast should improve things soon. Spawn has been the hot bait so far, but wax worms and flies also are taking a few fish.

Mesick Area

Steelhead and brown trout fishing has been fair on the Manistee River at Tippy Dam. Spawn bags, flies, and spinners are all taking fish. Inland lakes are starting to open up, and with warm weather in the forecast, the ice-fishing season has come to an end in Wexford County.

Cadillac Area

Ice fishing has come to an end on lakes Cadillac and Mitchell. There was still ice last week, but nothing  that was safe enough even for foot traffic. Local anglers are heading to the Manistee River and taking a shot at steelhead and brown trout. Fishing there has been fair.

Houghton Lake Area

Ice is falling apart quickly on Houghton Lake. A couple anglers were sneaking out last week, but ice was not safe for foot traffic. With warm weather in the forecast, the ice-fishing season has ended.

Hubbard Lake Area

Ice was opening up along the shore of Hubbard Lake last week, and ice-fishing season has come to a halt. A few anglers will start hitting the open water along shore for perch as the ice continues to melt.

Oscoda Area

Atlantic salmon, brown trout, and steelhead are hitting in open water off the pier on Lake Huron. Steelhead also have moved into the AuSable River, and anglers are catching fair numbers of fish all the way up to Foote Dam. Spawn bags have produced the best action. Ice on inland lakes is quickly melting along the shore. With warm weather and rain in the forecast, ice fishing has come to an end. The last angler out on VanEtten Lake reported catching good numbers of jumbo perch.
