Southern Lower Peninsula Fishing Report – March 13th, 2015

Lake St. Clair

Midweek rain made travel difficult and put a damper on fishing last week on Lake St. Clair. Anglers who did get out reported catching lots of small perch in front of and behind Metro Beach Metropark.

Irish Hills Area

Panfish and pike action has been good in the Irish Hills are. Bluegill anglers report a good bite on Devil’s Lake, and some big black crappies have been caught on Sand Lake. Pike anglers have been faring pretty well on Wamplers Lake with tip-ups attracting most of the attention. Coyote hunting has been fair.

Commerce Area

Fishing pressure has been slow in western Oakland County. A few walleyes have been caught on Union Lake, but most have been on the small side. The best action has been at night.

Edwardsburg Area

Walleye fishing has been pretty good on the St. Joe River below the dam at Berrien Springs. Jerkbaits and soft plastics are both taking fish. Crappies and some nice bluegills have been caught on Stone, Juno, Eagle, and East Saddle Bag lakes. Pike anglers fishing minnows on tip-ups are catching good numbers and sizes of fish on Diamond Lake. The north end has been hot. Predator hunting has been good, and crow hunting has been very good.

Kalamazoo Area

Smelt fishing has been outstanding on Gull Lake. The best action has come to anglers fishing at night in 65 to 80 feet of water. Underwater lights are attracting large schools of smelt. There was still about two feet of ice last week. Pike fishing has been good on Gull, too, including a couple of 12-pounders that were caught last week. Bluegills are hitting on Portage Lake in 8 feet of water off the marina and in the middle of the lake, suspended over 20 feet of water. Anglers report a very good perch bite on Gun Lake in 12 feet of water. Wigglers have produced the best results. Crappies are hitting on Pine Lake. Coyote hunting has been fair. There was still about a foot of snow on the ground last week.
