Getting the most out of this Wisconsin sport show season

“Sport show” meant only one thing when I was a kid; the Chicagoland Sport Fishing Travel & Outdoors Show.

This nine-day long granddaddy of all sport shows was an integral part of our outdoor tradition in the 1970s and 1980s, and it was serious business. We had ground to cover, and in order to avoid the crowds of casual weekenders, Dad would take me out of school for half a day midweek. We’d do our best to complete our appointed rounds before the show closed – at 10:30 pm!

Nowadays to me, “sport show” means manning an Outdoor News booth, not walking the aisles. So far this spring my tour has included stops in Schaumberg, Ill., a pair of weekends in Wausau and in Green Bay last weekend for a hunting expo.

For the outdoor pursuits themselves, the vibe has been overwhelmingly positive and the coming fishing and hunting seasons are greatly anticipated. It’s always nice to trade stories with Outdoor News readers and to see our successors – the next generation of hunters, trappers and anglers, tugging their chaperones down the aisles towards that next exhibit, or next dish of candy!

Speaking of “anticipation”; some great shows remain on the schedule here at Wisconsin Outdoor News;

– Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Sport Show runs Wednesday March 4 through Sunday March 8 at Wisconsin State Fair Park in West Allis.           www.jssportsshow.com

– The 2015 Wisconsin Deer and Turkey Expo runs Friday April 10 through Sunday April 12 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.             www.deerinfo.com/wisconsin

Both of these shows promise to be busy and if you are a serious business show attendee, it might pay to borrow a page from my dad’s playbook and visit during the week!

If you go, please be sure to stop by the Wisconsin Outdoor News booth and say “hello”.
