Northeast Minnesota Fishing Report – January 30th, 2015


Crappie reports remain strong on Rice Lake in 7 feet or Boulder Lake and Fish Lake in 15 to 25 feet with glow jigs and minnows. An occasional walleye is caught in the Duluth Harbor of Lake Superior in 8 feet, while Fish is producing bluegills in 10 feet.

A few walleyes are hitting on Snowbank Lake in 50 to 60 feet and on the reefs of Burntside Lake in 45 feet. Look for an occasional lake trout on Burntside, most of which are suspended over 30 to 60 feet. Anglers sight-fishing rainbow and brook trout are doing well on Miners Lake and Tofte Lake.

Lake trout continue to be caught with minnows, ciscoes or spoons at Loon Lake over 50 to 55 feet, Greenwood Lake in 35 to 50 feet, Daniels Lake in 60 feet, Pine Lake in 55 to 60 feet, and Gunflint Lake in 45 to 50 feet. Walleye reports have improved with jigs and chubs on Saganaga Lake in 40 feet or Gunflint in 35 feet. Waxworms and ice flies are turning splake at Musquash Lake in 13 to 19 feet and Esther Lake in 10 to 12 feet. Look to Carrot Lake in 15 feet for brook trout and to Leo Lake in 20 feet for rainbow trout.

There’s some decent crappie action during low-light periods on McCormick Lake in 15 to 18 feet and Echo Lake in 12 to 15 feet. The trout bite has slowed, although spoons continue to produce rainbow trout on the Kinney Pit in 15 feet.

Walleyes, jumbo perch and sauger are mixed together over deep, main lake structure – 30 feet or more. Tip-ups and light sucker minnows are producing northern pike in most bays, the mouths of those bays, and on mid-depth structure throughout the main lake.

Sunfish are biting at day at Knife Lake in 9 to 11 feet and crappies are hitting in 11 to 13 feet at night. Perch are biting on Ann Lake, but walleye and northern pike action is low.

Rainbow trout continue to be caught on the pits such as Gilbert, Lake Mine, Embarrass and Ore-B-Gone. Crappie and walleye reports have been limited this week, although most anglers are chasing trout.
