Northwest Pennsylvania Fish Report – January 16th, 2015

The steelhead streams were freezing up at the start of the new year, with a few anglers catching steelhead by breaking through the ice. Poor Richard’s Bait & Tackle weighed five steelhead, all caught from Walnut Creek on Jan. 3, when freezing rain was reported and snow was in the forecast.

Presque Isle Bay and Channel (Erie County) — Anglers caught a few burbot last month. These freshwater cod make their annual run through the channel when water gets frigid.

Pymatuning Reservoir (Crawford County) — Quality bluegills were hitting off the Jamestown Marina docks for anglers using small jigs tipped with grubs around brush piles.

Lake Arthur (Butler County) — Anglers were waiting for ice as of Jan. 3. They were catching crappies and bass in the open water. Small and medium fathead minnows were taking the crappies in mixed sizes, and shiners were working on bass. There was a little bit of skim ice in northern Muddy Creek and the back end of Shannon Run,         which was fast disappearing in heavy rainfall.
