Southern Lower Peninsula Fishing Report – December 19th, 2014

Lake St. Clair
There was no safe ice on Lake St. Clair last week. Some anglers were casting for walleyes in the open water at night, but it’s been tough to keep your line and guides from freezing. A few walleyes have been caught in the Detroit River.

Irish Hills Area
The ice-fishing season has yet to get  started in southern Michigan. Ice that formed overnight has melted during the day. Deer hunting has slowed considerably since Thanksgiving. Predator hunters are starting to target coyotes.

South Haven
A few whitefish have been caught off the piers in Lake Michigan. Salmon eggs fished on bottom have produced the best results. The Black River is producing good steelhead  action. Spawn, spoons, and flies are all taking a few fish. There was no safe ice on inland lakes in the area last week.

Kalamazoo Area
The Kalamazoo River below the Allegan Dam has been muddy but was starting to clear up last week. Plugs and spawn are taking some steelhead. Similar reports have been coming from anglers on the St. Joe River. Water temps are in the mid-30s, and steelies are hitting spawn, plugs, and wax worms.

Grand Rapids Area
Steelhead fishing remains fair on the Grand River. Spawn and spoons are producing good results. Inland lakes were still open as of last week.  Muzzleloader deer season has been decent. Coyote hunting is slow to get started.

Caseville Area
Lake trout are hitting through the ice at the mouth of the Pigeon River on jigging spoons and minnows. Anglers are reminded that lakers are legal in the river, but not in Lake Huron until Jan. 1. There was about 3 inches of ice last week, but warm weather was in the forecast, and lake trout fishing may be in open water by now. Muzzleloader and late archery deer hunting have been slow, but coyote hunting has been good.

Port Huron
Steelhead fishing has been good on the St. Clair River north of the Black River. Emerald shiners have produced good results from shore. A few walleyes have been caught, too. There was no snow on the ground last week. The late-season deer hunting has been fair.
