Southern Lower Peninsula Fishing Report – September 12th, 2014

Lake St. Clair

Perch fishing has been good in Lake St. Clair, but anglers are sorting through their catch to find the keepers. A few walleyes have been caught at the dumping grounds in 16 to 18 feet of water. Light numbers of ‘eyes have been caught in the Detroit River, but overall fishing there has been slow.

Irish Hills Area

Bluegill fishing has been good on Vineyard and Clark lakes. Pike anglers also report a good bite on Vineyard, and bass are hitting on most lakes in the area, including Devil’s. The early teal season was slow and hunting pressure was light. The early goose season got of to a good start, but has slowed.

Luna Pier Area

Perch fishing has been good in Lake Erie. The best action has been in Michigan water 6 to 12 feet deep. There are lots of geese and teal in the area, but hunting pressure has been light.

Allegan Area

Salmon fishing has been slow in the Kalamazoo River, but steelhead are hitting below the Allegan Dam. Salmon fishing has been good on Lake Michigan. Perch fishing has been hit or miss on the big lake. The schools are on the move, and anglers are finding it difficult to keep up with them. Bluegill fishing has been very good on Baseline, Duck, and Great Bear lakes. Crickets have produced the best bites.  Early goose season got off to a good start, and teal hunters reported seeing decent numbers of birds.

South Haven

Perch fishing remains pretty good  on Lake Michigan. Anglers fishing minnows in 40 to 45 feet of water south of the pier report the best action. Salmon and lake trout are hitting in Lake Michigan in 90 to 120 feet of water. The early goose season has been good, but teal hunting was slow.

Kalamazoo Area

Bluegill fishing has been good on Pleasant, School Section, Portage, Little Paw Paw, and Cedar lakes. Good numbers of crappies have been caught on Bankson, Rupert, and Sherman lakes in the evenings.  Minnows and slider grubs fished in 14 to 18 feet of water have been working best. Bass fishing remains good on Sunset, Cora, Gull, and Brandywine lakes.
