Northern Lower Peninsula Fishing Report – July 31st, 2014

East Jordan Area

Walleye fishing has been good on Lake Charlevoix, and anglers report catching smallmouth bass, rock bass, and sheepshead in the channel to Lake Michigan. Salmon are starting to show up in Lake Michigan, and anglers trolling spoons in 110 to 200 feet of water, 80 to 90 feet down, report success.

Kalkaska Area

Smallmouth bass fishing has been good on Skegemog and Elk lakes. Both live bait and artificial bait are producing a good bite. King salmon are starting to show up in West Grand Traverse Bay, and anglers are dialing in. Stream trout fishing has been pretty good throughout the area.

Mesick Area

Catfish action has been pretty good on Hodenpyle Pond. Anglers fishing with nightcrawlers or stink baits are reporting good results. Bluegills and sunfish are hitting leaf worms fished in the shallows and along the weeds in Green Lake and most other lakes in the area.

Cadillac Area

Fishing has been pretty good on lakes Cadillac and Mitchell. Lots of pike between 20 and 26 inches have been caught, and a couple in the 30-inch range have come to the net, too. Bass fishing has been good. Anglers fishing in the shallows in the early mornings report good action, especially on topwaters and crankbaits. A fair crappie bite has been found at the east end of Lake Cadillac by anglers fishing with minnows. Walleyes have moved into deeper water. A few ‘eyes have been caught on bottom bouncers with crawler harnesses.

Mio Area

Fishing has been slow on the AuSable River, and fishing pressure has been light. Terrestials were producing fair results, and a few Cahills are hatching, too. Streamer fishing for browns has been good.

Houghton Lake Area

Fishing has slowed a little on Houghton Lake as summer settles in. The weedbeds are holding most of the fish, and anglers fishing along the weeds report catching a mixed bag of bluegills, crappies, bass, and walleyes. Live bait fished in 8 feet of water has produced decent results in East Bay and in front of the boat ramp at Rite Aid. Pike are being caught all over the lake.

Higgins Lake Area

Rock bass up to 10 inches long are hitting minnows fished along the drop-off on Higgins Lake. Anglers trolling and jigging for lakers are catching fish in 100 to 120 feet of water. Trollers are scoring with cowbells and dodgers, while the jiggers are taking fish on Swedish pimples and Crocodiles tipped with minnow heads.

Oscoda Area

Trout fishing has been decent on Lake Huron. Anglers trolling in 90 to 100 feet of water straight out from the harbor are catching pretty good numbers of lake trout and a few steelhead.  Walleye fishing has been good in the AuSable River and on Foote Dam Pond. Nightcrawlers and leeches are both producing good results.
