LAKE MICHIGAN/METRO AREA LAKES All of the area lakes were free of ice as of April 17. It’s time to hit the water in search of panfish until the game fish season opens May 3. Bluegills will be found in the warmest water, which will be found in shallow, dark-bottomed bays, channels, and marsh areas.
