Metro Area Minnesota Fishing Report – January 17th, 2014


Eight- to 13-foot weeds on Big Marine Lake are holding crappies and sunfish. Work the channels on Forest Lake during the evening for walleyes in eight to 15 feet. Suckers are producing pike at Little Green Lake in eight to 10 feet and the North Hudson area of the St. Croix River is giving up crappies.

Look to Lake Zumbra with sucker minnows for pike in 12 to 14 feet, while Lake Minnewashta is producing pike in 12 feet and crappies in 18 to 20 feet during the evening. On Lake Susan, sunfish have started hitting in 10 to 12 feet and Lake Parley is giving up crappies and sunfish in 12 to 18 feet. Sunfish can be had at Christmas Lake in 14 to 18 feet.

Pike action has been strong with tip-ups and sucker minnows on Center Reef, Pillsbury Reef, and Waconia Bay in 10 to 14 feet. Sunfish also are biting in the same areas over nine to 14 feet, while crappies are suspended over 20 to 22 feet in Wagener’s Bay. A few walleyes can be had at night along the 13- to 15-foot weedlines on Anderson’s Reef, North Reef, and Kegg’s Reef.

Crappies and walleyes are in 30 to 35 feet on Lake Minnetonka and Lake Independence during the evening hours. You’ll pull sunfish and northern pike on Medicine Lake and Lake Sarah along the weeds in 15 to 19 feet.

Suckers are producing pike at Pelican Lake in 12 feet and Clearwater Lake in 12 to 16 feet. Crappies are over 25 to 35 feet at Clearwater, Granite Lake, Lake John, and Pleasant Lake. Cedar Lake, Lake Sylvia, and Clearwater are giving up walleyes at sunset in 18 to 24 feet.

Sight fishing in six to 10 feet has been the ticket for sunfish on the south end of Chisago Lake. There’s an evening walleye bite at South Center Lake in 16 to 20 feet, while crappies are hitting in front of the hospital on South Lindstrom Lake.

East Rush and West Rush lakes continue to produce limits of crappies  after dark over 17 to 25 feet. Both Rush lakes, Fish Lake, and Goose Lake are kicking out pike on sucker minnows in 12 to 15 feet. The Goose Chain is producing crappies and sunfish as well.
