Pure Michigan Hunt and Michigan Outdoor News

Bill ParkerFour years ago, when the DNR initiated the Pure Michigan Hunt I thought it was a great idea. Michigan hunters could submit as many $4 Pure Michigan Hunt applications as they wished toward a chance to win a number of hunting licenses, including licenses to hunt elk, bears, spring and fall turkeys, managed waterfowl, and antlerless deer. And winning the Pure Michigan Hunt lottery didn’t count against any points you may have already accumulated toward a regular elk- or bear-hunting license. You’re still eligible for those drawings in the future.

Three winners would be chosen randomly through a lottery-style drawing each year after the Dec. 31 entry deadline had passed. Winners were announced in January, and licenses were valid for that year only.

As the program took roots, dozens of Michigan companies and organizations stepped forward to support it and sweeten the pot by donating hunting-related gifts and gear for the three winners. This year, each winner will receive a prize package including guns, a crossbow, a video camera, clothing, and much more. The package is valued at over $4,000. MON has donated a lifetime subscription to the paper, a wildlife art print, a sportsman’s calendar, and a logo hat to the package, but we didn’t stop there.

Michigan Outdoor News supports the Pure Michigan Hunt and sound, scientific wildlife management in this state. I’m very proud to announce that MON is title sponsor of the 2014 Pure Michigan Hunt.

MON readers are highly engaged in hunting, wildlife management, and the outdoor traditions in Michigan. I encourage you all to purchase a Pure Michigan Hunt application this year and take a chance on winning the fabulous license and prize package that awaits. Even if you don’t win, you can take solace in knowing that your money was used to enhance wildlife habitat in this state.
