DOOR PENINSULA AND KEWAUNEE AREA
The Sturgeon Bay ship canal had some skim ice forming, as did Sawyer Harbor and the back bays of Little Sturgeon, which makes it that much tougher to get out. Prior to the cold snap, the walleye action around the Henderson’s Point area was going extremely well for fishermen who were able to get out. Fishermen were concentrating around the primary drop-off in that 10 to 20 feet of water range. Regular and deep-diving Rapala Husky Jerks, Smithwick Rogues, and Reef Runners have been the baits of choice. Other areas to try – and areas that are usually very good spots this time of year – are Sherwood Point, Larson’s Reef, and Monument Shoals. Perch fishing was going well in and around the Sawyer Harbor area up until the cold snap. Depending on the weather, that is still an option. Medium fathead minnows are the best live bait for this time of year. Northern pike action also has been going OK for shore fishermen and boat fishermen – of course, weather permitting. Large crankbaits, spoons, and medium and large suckers have been working the best. Ice fishermen are getting geared up for the season, especially after seeing some of the inner bays with ice cover. Once we get good, safe ice, there will be much more to report.

LA CROSSE AREA
Cold weather has improved ice conditions. Anglers are catching plenty of bluegills behind the bait shop on Lake Onalaska. Nice perch and crappies are being caught near Gunderson. Walleye and sauger action has been good. Try bouncing a jig and minnow off the bottom. Contact the local bait shops for current ice conditions. Local trappers are reporting good success on raccoons. Pheasant-hunting success has been limited. Most of the final pheasant stocking will be finished within a week or two.

Anglers are attempting to ice fish the Devil’s Elbow area on the Petenwell Flowage. Ice conditions are improving with the lower temperatures, but always proceed with caution. Anglers have been getting out on the ice without too much trouble, but please be careful.
