Northern Lower Peninsula Fishing Report – September 27th, 2013

East Jordan Area

The panfish bite has been good on the Bellaire Chain of Lakes, and bass are starting to move back into the shallows. Walleyes and baitfish are showing up in the south arm of Lake Charlevoix, but fishing has been slow. Squirrel and rabbit numbers are up.

Kalkaska Area

Salmon have moved into the Boardman and Elk rivers, and anglers are dialing in. Smallmouth bass fishing has been good on Lake Skegemog. Fishing pressure has been light. Grouse-hunting season should be good.

Wellston Area

Salmon have moved into the Big Manistee River and are starting to stack up at Tippy Dam. Lots of fish over 25 pounds have been caught, including one that tipped the scale at 34 pounds, 6 ounces. Early goose season was good. Grouse and woodcock season is slow to get started. Squirrel numbers are up.

Houghton Lake Area

Walleyes are moving into the shallows on Houghton Lake and anglers are starting to catch them from shore. Bluegills and sunfish are hitting in 7 feet of water along the weeds. Bass fishing has been good along the shoreline. Anglers casting nightcrawlers and soft plastics under docks and rafts are catching a lot of bass. Grouse season is off to a fair start.

Onaway Area

Walleye fishing has been good on Black Lake in 15 feet of water. Purple crawler harnesses have produced the best results. Salmon have moved into  the Ocqueoc River. Fishing pressure has been light, but the bite has been decent. There are good numbers of grouse in the area, but hunting pressure has been light. Bear season should be good, with lots of bruins in Cheboygan and Presque Isle counties.

Oscoda Area

A fair number of salmon have moved into the AuSable River all the way up to Foote Dam, and anglers are dialing in. Spawn and crankbaits have produced good results. Walleye fishing has been good on VanEtten Lake. Grouse hunting should be decent.
