Specifics of Wisconsin crossbow bill amendment spelled out

Dean BortzHere is a copy of a memo sent to members of the Senate Natural Resources Committee, which is chaired by Sen. Neal Kedzie, R-Elkhorn. The amendment has been credited to Sen. Terry Moulton, R-Chippewa Falls.

The memo reads: “A Senate substitute amendment to AB 194 has been drafted, and will soon be introduced by the Senate author.  Attached is a copy of the amendment, along with a short summary.

“The substitute amendment incorporates AB 194 as passed by the Assembly, with the following revisions:
“1.      Establishes an open crossbow season to run concurrent with an open bow and arrow season for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 season.
“2.      Requires the DNR to specify, by rule, the open seasons which special deer permits are valid, and the types of weapons authorized to be used under such permits.
“3.      Allows the DNR to promulgate emergency rules necessary for the purpose of establishing a crossbow season.

“The committee will meet in executive session on Thursday, Aug. 22 at 9:30 a.m. and a notice will be posted shortly.”

If this amendment is adopted, it would appear that there would be no crossbow season this fall, since the amendment specifies that the season would start in the fall of 2014.

Wisconsin Outdoor News has a reporter at the Aug. 21 Senate committee hearing on AB 194 and will carry a full report on the hearing, and the Aug. 22 executive session, in the next issue.
