Northeast Minnesota Fishing Report – July 5th, 2013


Hit Island Lake in 18 to 20 feet and Boulder Lake in 12 to 14 feet with leeches for walleyes. Reports off Lake Superior indicate a steady salmon and lake trout bite over the top 50 to 75 feet of the water column. Look to Fish Lake for bluegills in six to 10 feet and Island for smallmouth bass in six to 12 feet.

Walleyes are still hitting in less than 12 feet on most lakes including Caribou, Seagull, East Twin, Two Island, Hungry Jack, and Northern Light. Lake trout are suspended over deep water and hitting spoons or ciscoes at Lake Saganaga and Seagull. Leo Lake and Esther Lake are producing rainbow trout on crawlers in 12 to 15 feet and Lost Lake is giving up a few brook trout in 18 feet. Smallmouth bass are hitting on the shallow rocks and shorelines of most lakes, while sucker minnows are producing pike on Homer Lake and Northern Light.

Leeches and Lindy rigs or slip bobbers and leeches are turning walleyes in 10 to 18 feet. The sand/boulder areas are spots to look for smallmouth bass and northern pike are hitting crankbaits or spinners and minnows on the weedlines in most bays. Big plastics are raising muskies on the emerging weedlines.
