Southwest Minnesota Fishing Report – April 26th, 2013

FAIRMONT AREA

Lakes are ice-free and crappies are in 12 feet, but look for them to move shallow with the first hint of warm weather. Anglers are catching walleyes and pike with minnows and jigs on the Des Moines River.

ORTONVILLE AREA

There was a strange twist on Big Stone Lake last weekend for the Minnesota/South Dakota border walleye opener – anglers caught fish through the ice. Ice anglers who worked the north end of Big Stone did well for walleyes with some limits reported. The shorelines are starting to pull away, so call ahead for ice fishing options this weekend, but the South Dakota shorelines seem to be holding up better than the Minnesota side.

WATERVILLE AREA

A couple of lakes are ice-free while others have ice that appears to be deteriorating quickly. With warm weather in the forecast, this area should have nothing but open water within the next 10 days.
