Northern Lower Peninsula Fishing Report – March 1st, 2013

Indian River

High wind put a damper on ice fishing in Emmett County last week. Pike fishing has been pretty good on Burt Lake. There was about a foot of snow on the ground last week, and coyote hunting has been good.

Traverse City Area

Walleye fishing has been good on Long Lake. Tip-ups and minnows have produced the best results when set in 20 to 30 feet of water. Steelhead fishing remains pretty good in the Boardman River. Tiny jigs tipped with wax worms are producing good results. Whitefish and lake trout have been caught in 60 to 100 feet of water on Crystal. Lake. Predator hunting has been good. Coyotes are on the move.
Wild Fishing

Cadillac Area

There was 12 inches of ice and 10 inches of packed snow on lakes Cadillac and Mitchell last week. Pike fishing has been good on both lakes, and fair numbers of walleyes have been caught on Mitchell. Crappies and bluegills have been caught on both lakes, but action has been hit or miss. Coyote hunting has been fair.

Grayling Area

A few bluegills are hitting wax worms fished in 14 feet of water in the west bay of Lake Margrethe. Perch fishing has been pretty good on the north end of Higgins Lake, and a few lake trout are being caught there, too. Smelt are hitting in the west bay, and “Smelt Town” has sprung up. There was a couple feet of snow on the ground last week, and coyote hunters report fair success.

Oscoda Area

Steelhead fishing has been good in the AuSable River and off the pier in the open water of Lake Huron. Pike fishing has been good on Van Etten Lake. There was just a couple inches of snow on the ground last week, but hunting pressure has been light.

Hillman Area

Pike fishing had been pretty good on Fletcher Pond before wind and rain put a damper on things last week. A few panfish and pike were being caught on Grass Lake, and the walleye bite has been good on Beaver Lake. There was between 6 and 8 inches of snow on the ground last week. Coyote and rabbit hunting pressure has been light.
