Metro Area Fishing Report – January 31st, 2013


The 12-foot weedlines of Eagle Lake are giving up a few walleyes during low-light periods and crappies are being found here over 26 feet. Tip-ups and sucker minnows are producing northern pike on Parker’s Lake and Schmidt Lake throughout the day. The south end of Medicine Lake is giving up sunfish in eight to 10 feet and crappies are being found suspended over the deeper holes.

Crappies and sunfish continue to be caught in 13 to 15 feet of water at Hydes Lake. Look to Lake Bavaria for crappies during the evening hours in 14 feet and walleye action has been slow. Northern pike remain active hitting sucker minnows in 12 to 15 feet on Lake Zumbra and Lake Auburn.

Walleye action has picked up off Center Reef and Kegg’s Reef in 13 to 17 feet during the morning and evening hours. Sunfish action also has been strong on the 10- to 13- foot weeds in Waconia Bay, on Nelson’s Flats, Pillsbury Reef, and Center Reef. Look for crappies on Center Reef in 13 feet during low-light periods.

Low-light periods have been best for crappies, most of which are suspended in 25 to 30 feet on the small bays of Lake Minnetonka, Lake Sarah, and Lake Independence. Tip-ups and sucker minnows are producing northern pike in 15 feet on most lakes, while sunfish are hitting on Black Lake, Spring Park, and Phelp’s Bay on Minnetonka in eight to 10 feet.

Look for suspended crappies in 25 feet of water or more behind the island on Clearwater Lake, Ramsey Lake, Pleasant Lake, and Granite Lake. Walleye action has been slow, but northern pike continue to hit sucker minnows on most lakes in 14 to 18 feet of water. Sunfish continue to hit in 14 to 18 feet on Lake Marie, Maple Lake, and John Lake.

Crappie action has improved at Kroon Lake in 18 to 21 feet and South Lindstrom Lake is giving up a few walleyes during the late evening hours in 12 to 20 feet. Look to the shallow weedlines of Little Green Lake with sucker minnows for northern pike. Sunfish are hitting on South Lindstrom and Chisago Lake in eight to 14 feet. Whispering Bay on South Center Lake is producing crappies and sunfish during low-light periods in 12 to 14 feet.
