Northern Lower Peninsula Fishing Report – January 18th, 2013

Indian River

There was up to 4 inches of ice on Burt and Mullett lakes last week, but  high winds have been blowing the ice around. Walleye, perch, and pike fishing has been decent. Minnows have produced the best results when fished in 17 feet of water. Only a few inches of snow remained on the ground, and with warm weather and rain forecast for last weekend, conditions were expected to deteriorate.

East Jordan Area

There was about 6 inches of ice on the south arm of Lake Charlevoix, but with warm weather and rain in the forecast, local anglers were holding their breath. Browns and rainbows have been caught on minnows fished in 15 to 17 feet of water. Crappies and ‘gills were hitting on the Elk Lake Chain of Lakes where there was up to 5 inches of ice. A few splake have been caught on Lake Louise, and perch fishing has been good on Lake Skegemog. Coyote-hunting pressure has been light.

Cadillac Area

Ice was running between 8 and 10 inches thick on lakes Cadillac and Mitchell. Anglers report excellent pike fishing on both lakes, with several fish between 32 and 35 inches being iced. Walleye fishing has been decent. Crappie fishing has been hit or miss, with the best bites coming on Cadillac.

Houghton Lake Area

Ice on Houghton Lake was running between 6 and 8 inches thick last week. Anglers are catching good numbers of walleyes on tip-ups baited with minnows in 8 to 12 feet of water. Lots of pike are being caught in 8 feet of water. Panfish action has been slow. There was about an inch of snow on the ice. Hunting pressure has been light, but a few coyotes have been killed.

Higgins Lake Area

Higgins Lake was wide open last week. It had frozen a couple times, but high winds and high temperatures destroyed the ice. There was very little snow on the ground. Coyote hunting has been decent, but hunting pressure has been light.

Hubbard Lake Area

Ice up to 4 inches thick has been reported at the south end of Hubbard Lake and in East Bay. Some nice walleyes and perch have been caught on minnows. There was just a dusting of snow on the ground, and with rain and warm weather in the forecast, it wasn’t expected to last long. Coyote-hunting pressure has been light.

Hillman Area

Ice was running between 8 and 10 inches thick last week on Fletcher Pond. Anglers were catching good numbers of northern pike and fair numbers of crappies and bluegills. On Lake 15, anglers reported a good smelt bite, and a couple splake and lake trout have been caught on Avalon where there up to 5 inches of ice. There was 8 inches of snow on the ground, but rabbit and coyote hunting has been slow.
