Central Lower Peninsula Fishing Report – January 4th, 2013

Saginaw Bay Area

There was no safe ice last week on  Saginaw Bay. Perch were being caught in the marinas before they froze over. Good numbers of walleyes have been caught in the open water at the mouth of the Saginaw River on crankbaits. There was about three inches of snow on the ground with more in the forecast. Predator hunting is starting to heat up.

Baldwin Area

Steelhead fishing has ben pretty good on the Pere Marquette River. Anglers report a good bite on wax worms and spawn. There was up to three inches of ice on local inland lakes, and anglers were champing at the bit to get out last week. About six inches of snow had fallen in the area. Late deer hunting was productive, and predator hunting has been good.

Caseville Area

Anglers are fishing through the ice off floating docks in the harbor on Lake Huron. A few anglers were casting into the open water for lake trout. There was about three inches of snow. Coyote hunting has been good, and there are lots of geese in the area, so the late season should be good.

Port Huron

Steelhead fishing has been very good off the boardwalk on the St. Clair River. Shiners and red-eye spoons have been productive. A few walleyes have been caught on  pencil plugs and crankbaits. There was about two inches of snow on the ground just after Christmas with more in the forecast. Deer-hunting pressure was light for the late seasons. Coyote hunting is just getting started, but there are lots of coyotes in the area.
