Northern Lower Peninsula Fishing Report – August 17th, 2012

Indian River

Walleye fishing has been good on Crooked Lake. Crankbaits and nightcrawlers have produced pretty good results. Fishing pressure has been light on Burt and Mullett lakes, where the surface water has been up to 80 degrees. Steams are running low, but trout fishing has been good.

Traverse City Area

Salmon are starting to show up in West and East Grand Traverse Bay. Anglers pulling spoons and flies in 140 feet of water report good action. Smallmouth bass also are being caught in 25 to 35 feet of water. Smallies and panfish are hitting in Crystal Lake. Walleyes are hitting in 12 to 16 feet of water on South Lake Leelanau.

Cadillac Area

Fishing has slowed a little on lakes Cadillac and Mitchell, but anglers fishing early and late in the day in deep water report decent success for crappies and bluegills. Largemouth bass fishing also has been good.

Houghton Lake Area

Walleye fishing has been pretty good on Houghton Lake. Anglers drifting crawlers and casting Hot ‘N Tots report a good bite in 8 to 9 feet of water. Bluegill and perch fishing has been good, too. Wax worms and leaf worms have produced the best results.

Higgins Lake Area

A few decent perch have been caught on minnows fished in 60 to 70 feet of water in Higgins Lake. Rock bass action also has been exceptional, with a good bite being reported from anglers fishing around the sunken island and on top of the drop-offs. A few lake trout have been caught in 80 to 120 feet of water east of the state park.

Oscoda Area

Lake trout and salmon are hitting in Lake Huron in 80 to 120 feet of water. Fair numbers of steelhead have been caught up high on long-lines. Good numbers of smallmouth bass have been caught in off the piers, and walleye action has been good in the AuSable River.
