Northwest Minnesota Fishing Report – August 10th, 2012


Crappies are hitting tube jigs and minnows in 12 to 18 feet at Lake Carlos and Lake Darling and you’ll find sunfish in 16 to 18 feet at Lake Ida or eight to 12 feet on Darling. Walleye action has slowed, but some fish are being taken during low-light periods in six to 10 feet with crankbaits at Ida and Lake Miltona. Crawlers and spinners continue to produce walleyes on Lake Reno in six to eight feet. Muskie action has been limited, but bass are hitting crankbaits and plastics on the deep weed flats of most lakes.

Bluegills and crappies are being pulled from 10 to 17 feet at lakes Blanche, Rush, Mollie Stark, East Battle, and West Battle. Fatheads are turning perch on the flats of Otter Tail Lake, while bass are an easy catch at Fiske Lake, Dead Lake, and Donald Lake. Crawlers are producing walleyes during the day in 11 to 20 feet as are crankbaits on the flats at night on Otter Tail, West Battle, Big Pine Lake, and Silver Lake. Bucktails are raising muskies in 10 feet on West Battle, while suckers or spoons are producing northern pike on the weedlines of Fiske, Donald, and East Battle.

Walleyes are scattered between seven and 25 feet and hitting a jig and minnow at Big Detroit Lake, Lake Melissa, and Pelican Lake. Look for sunfish on the 12- to 15-foot weedlines of lakes Melissa, Sallie, Severson, Floyd, and Big Detroit. Look for bigger bass on the deep weedlines of most lakes, while CowGirls and topwater baits are raising muskies on Big Detroit and Beers Lake.

Minnows worked on the 14- to 17-foot weedlines of Long Lake are turning a few walleyes. Bluegills are hitting waxworms on the weedlines of Fish Hook Lake, Toad Lake, and the Crow Wing Chain. Rainbow trout are suspended over deep water and hitting crawlers at Long and Bad Medicine Lake, while Fish Hook, Island and Potato Lake have been best for bass. Muskie anglers on Big Mantrap Lake are reporting decent action with bucktails.
