Southern Lower Peninsula Fishing Report – August 3rd, 2012

Irish Hills Area

Bluegill fishing has been good on Devil’s and Wamplers lakes. Those fishing crickets in 20 to 25 feet of water report success. Bass fishing has been good, too, with good catches coming from most of the lakes in the area. Soft plastics are producing the best results.

Lake Orion

Panfish action has been pretty good, despite the warm weather. Leaf worms and minnows are producing good action on Lakeville Lake and Lake Orion. Bass fishing also has been pretty good on Orion. Work the shallows in the mornings and move out to the first weedline later in the day. Trout fishing has been slow on Paint Creek.

Luna Pier Area

Perch are hitting minnows fished in 13 feet of water on Lake Erie in front of Toledo Beach. Lots of 8- to 10-inch fish are being caught, with an occasional jumbo coming to the boat.

Allegan Area

Salmon and steelhead fishing remains good on Lake Michigan in 80 feet of water and deeper. Steelhead fishing has been slow in the Kalamazoo River and the water level is down. Bluegills and crappies are hitting on Great Bear, Duck, and Baseline lakes. The best action has come to anglers who locate suspended fish in 30 to 60 feet of water. Perch fishing remains good on Lake Michigan in 40 to 48 feet of water.

South Haven

Salmon and steelhead fishing has been excellent on Lake Michigan. The best action has been in 70 to 120 feet of water, 50 feet down and deeper. Blue dolphin and orange have been the hot colors. Perch fishing has been good in 30 to 35 feet of water right off the pier heads.

Kalamazoo Area

Bluegill fishermen are reporting good catches in deeper water. Suspended ‘gills are hitting on Pleasant Lake, Gravel Lake, Corey Lake, Cedar Lake, Portage Lake, and Little Paw Paw Lake. Anglers on Little Paw Paw also are catching perch in 20 to 25 feet of water. A few walleyes and smallmouth bass are being caught in the Kalamazoo River below the Allegan Dam. Minnows, nightcrawlers, and shallow-running crankbaits are producing good results. A few walleyes have been caught at night on Maple Lake.
