PF&BC licensing flexibiltiy is a win-win for agency, anglers

Tom VeneskyThe Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission hopes that a multi-year license will help slow the trend of anglers who drop in and out of the sport.

The agency has said that significant number of anglers don't buy licenses consistently each year. It's not that they're fishing illegally, but rather when the notion strikes them and they feel they'll have some time to fish in the upcoming year they'll make the purchase.

If things seem a bit hectic, leaving little time to fish, perhaps those same anglers will skip that year.

But the concept of a multi-year license, one that anglers can buy and it's good for three or five years, seems like a perfect fix.

A new law recently enacted by Gov. Corbett gives the agency’s board the ability to get creative with its licensing options. Possibilities include multi-year licenses, family packages and promotional licenses. The measure does not raise the cost of a fishing license.

According to Norm Gavlick, who represents the northeast region on the Fish & Boat Commission  board, some of the new licensing options could become a reality next year.

Personally, I love the idea of being able to make a one-time purchase of a fishing license and not have to worry about ,it for a few years. Sure, if the move stabilizes license sales and increases the amount of federal funding the commisson receives that's great. And from an angler's perspective, it's convenient as well.

Allow the trout/salmon stamp to be purchased the same way, and the agency is certainly on the right track.
And there's more.

With the new law, the commission can also offer licenses at a discount. This would be the perfect incentive for anglers to buy a multi-year license, if they even need one.

In the next year or two the Fish & Boat Commission is going to get creative with itslicensing options. Prices won't go up because of this, but options for anglers and revenue for the agency will.

That's a win-win no matter how you look at it.
