Southern Lower Peninsula Fishing Report – July 20th, 2012


Lake St. Clair
Perch, walleyes, and catfish are hitting in Lake St. Clair in the south channel. The early bite has been the best. Muskie fishing has been very good in the middle of the lake near the weather buoy in about 20 feet of water.

Trenton Area
Walleye fishing remains good on the Detroit River. Hand-liners and jiggers are picking up good numbers of fish from the sand piles to the Ambassador Bridge on the Canadian  side of the river, and on the American side off Peach Island at the mouth of Lake St Clair.

Luna Pier Area
Walleye fishing remains red hot in the western basin of Lake Erie. Anglers trolling with crawler harnesses and spoons are catching fish in 18 to 19 feet of water in Brest Bay, and in 22 to 26 feet of water between Stony Point and the Fermi Nuclear Plant. A fair number of perch are being caught on minnows fished off Stony Point in 25 feet of water.

Allegan Area
Salmon fishing is heating up in southern Lake Michigan. Anglers report catching good numbers of fish in 60 to 90 feet of water. A few perch are hitting closer to shore, but anglers are having to search for them in 20 to 40 feet of water.

South Haven
Salmon fishing has been fair on Lake Michigan out of South Haven. Anglers trolling spoons or flies and dodgers report catching a few fish in 70 to 80 feet of water. Perch fishing has been slow, and the fish are scattered. A few steelhead and an occasional salmon are being caught off the South Haven pier, according to recent angler reports.

Kalamazoo Area
Bluegill fishing has been excellent on Pleasant Lake, Rupert Lake, Gull Lake, North Lake, and School Section Lake. One angler found some nice perch out on School Section and Shafer Lake. A few trout have been caught in Hemlock Lake. Pike fishing has been good on Twin Lakes, Ousterhout Lake, Portage Lake, Barton Lake, and Gull Lake. A decent walleye bite has been reported by anglers fishing on Gravel Lake, Bankson Lake, Maple Lake, and Cedar Lake.
