This report highlights a few of the best places to fish, what anglers are using and what they are catching. The information is compiled from regional Fish and Game fishery managers, local tackle shops and anglers.
Reports from Panhandle tackle shops indicate that pike fishing on Coeur d’Alene Lake is good, especially in the bays around the lake. Spinnerbaits are the most popular lures for pike; look for the fish in the deeper weeds. Chinook fishing has been quietly improving in the area but Kokanee fishing has been steady with the best action on the south end of the lake. The kokanee are ranging around 10 inches. Kokanee fishing has also been very good at Spirit Lake, with anglers finding plenty of fish in the 9-10 inch range.
Interested in small- and largemouth bass? Try Hayden Lake and use crankbaits. Fish are hanging around about 10 feet down.
If you fly fish, dry flies are working well in early mornings and late evenings on both the Coeur d’Alene and St. Joe rivers.
The chain lakes (especially Cave, Killarney and Medicine Lakes) are hot for panfish right now—including perch, bluegill and crappie.
A report out of the Priest Lake area indicates that mackinaw have really been responding to jigging, drop-shooting and trolling.
Health Advisory issued for Fernan Lake: A health advisory was issued today for Fernan Lake by the Panhandle Health District and the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality. Water samples confirmed the presence of blue-green algae that can produce toxins harmful to humans and animals. With proper precautions to avoid water contact, people are encouraged to enjoy other activities near the lake including camping, hiking, biking, catch-and-release fishing and bird watching. If people choose to eat fish from this area, it is recommended that they remove all fat, skin and organs before cooking since toxins are most likely to collect in those tissues.
Be sure to pick up a current copy of the Idaho Fishing Rules and if you are over 14, and an Idaho Fishing license.
