Storms damage state forests
Persons hoping to take a July Fourth extended weekend trip or a vacation to one of Ohio’s state Forests are advised that recent severe weather has caused extensive damage.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is reporting that all trails for the southern state forests are closed until further notice.
This includes the all-purpose-vehicle areas at Pike, Richland Furnace, and Perry state forests. All horse camps, backpack camps, hiking trails, and bridle trails are closed as well.
State forestry crews are working to clear roads and trails, but due to the extensive damage, it is unlikely that all of these will be opened anytime soon. In addition, many forest roads are also closed since there are many hanging limbs and uprooted trees that may pose hazards to forest visitors for months to come, the Natural Resources Department said.
