Northern Lower Peninsula Fishing Report – June 22nd, 2012

East Jordan Area

Fishing has been red hot on Lake Charlevoix. Walleye action has been good all over the lake in 15 to 20 feet of water. Crawler harnesses, jigs and crankbaits are all catching lots of fish. Salmon fishing has been very good in Lake Michigan. Anglers fishing between the red can and the green can off Fisherman’s Island report a good bite. The hex hatch is on and brown trout fishing has been very good on the Jordan and Boyne rivers.

Wellston Area

Skamania steelhead are starting to hit below Tippy Dam on the Manistee River and anglers are taking advantage of the action. The hex hatch is on and browns are hitting at night on the Manistee below the Hodenpyle Dam. A few kings and steelhead have been caught on alewives fished off the pier heads on Lake Michigan. A few kings also have been caught in the Little Manistee River.

Cadillac Area

The panfish bite has been good on lakes Cadillac and Mitchell. Wax worms and leaf worms are taking ’gills in the shallows along shore and minnows are catching crappies a little farther out.

Grayling Area

The hex hatch is on and anglers are catching lots of trout on the Manistee and AuSable rivers. Walleyes are hitting in 15 to 18 feet of water on Lake Margrethe. Nightcrawlers and leeches are both producing good results. Perch are being caught in 14 feet of water. Bluegills are still in the shallows on the south end of Margrethe and are hitting wax worms.

Houghton Lake Area

Walleye fishing has been good on Houghton Lake, but high winds have toyed with anglers. Walleyes are hitting crawler harnesses drifted along the weeds in 6 to 8 feet of water. The bluegill bite has also been pretty good along the weeds. Pike fishing has been hot all over the lake, but most are undersized.

Higgins Lake Area

Perch fishing has been good on Higgins Lake. Anglers fishing with minnows along the dropoff in 30 to 40 feet of water report good action. A fair number of lakers have been caught out in deeper waters.
