Panfish action heating up; toms are strutting – Northern LP Report

Baldwin Area

Steelhead fishing remains very good on the Pere Marquette River. Spawn, spinners, cranks, and flies are all taking fish. Panfish are moving into the shallows on inland lakes, and anglers are catching good numbers of fish on Idlewild, Wolf, and some of the smaller private lakes in the area. Toms are strutting, and the spring season should be pretty good.

East Jordan Area

Perch fishing has been pretty good  on Lake Charlevoix. Anglers fishing in Raspberry Bay in 50 to 55 feet of water are catching good numbers of fish, but they are on the move, and anglers have to move to stay on top of them. A few steelhead are still being caught in the Jordan, Boyne, and Bear rivers. Toms are strutting and turkey hunting should be good.

Kalkaska Area

Steelhead fishing remains good on the Boardman, Elk, and Manistee rivers. Spawn, wax worms, spinners, and flies have all produced good results. The panfish bite is just getting started on inland lakes in the area and should improve with a little warmer weather. Toms are strutting and gobbling. The spring season should be decent.

Cadillac Area

Fishing has been fair on lakes Cadillac and Mitchell, but fishing pressure has been light. Turkeys are on the move and breaking out of their bachelor groups.

Grayling Area

Panfish action has been slow on Lake Margrethe and other lakes in the area. Tom turkeys are starting to break out of their bachelor groups. The spring season should be good.

Houghton Lake Area

Fishing has slowed a little on Houghton Lake now that seasonal weather has returned. A few crappies and bluegills are hitting in the canals. Anglers are waiting for warmer weather to warm the water. Toms are strutting and breaking out of their bachelor groups.

Hubbard Lake Area

A few keeper perch have been caught, but overall fishing has been slow on Hubbard Lake. Toms are gobbling and strutting, and numbers appear to be in good shape. The spring turkey season should be a good one.

Oscoda Area

Steelhead fishing has been very good on the AuSable River. Fish are moving onto the beds. Pier fishing in Lake Huron has been good for walleyes. Gobblers are strutting, and there are good numbers of birds in the area. Turkey season should be good.
