Arizona Urban Fishing Report for April 2, 2012
Second catfish stocking of the season this week
The second catfish stocking of the spring season will take place the week of April 2-7 at all Phoenix and Tucson area Urban waters.
Cats from the March 23 season-opening date have been biting well on worms, stink baits, hot dogs or shrimp fished on the bottom. Reports of 3- to 5-pound channel catfish have come in from a variety of lakes in Tucson, Phoenix, and Tempe.
Catfish actively prowl for food in the evenings and early mornings, and often move into shallower waters under cover of darkness.
Fishing for redear sunfish is excellent at all Phoenix and Tucson area waters that were just stocked March 23 and 29. Best baits for the feisty, 5- to 8-inch sunfish are worms and mealworms fished under a small bobber in 3- to 6-foot depths.
Riverview Lake in Mesa is now closed to fishing, due to a major construction project involving the new Cubs Baseball Stadium project, and will not be reopened until 2014.
At Green Valley Lakes (Payson) fishing is good to excellent for trout. Trout will continue to be stocked in Green Valley through mid May. Try Power Bait, worms or salmon eggs off the bottom.
Last Stocking: All Urban Fishing Program waters in Phoenix and Tucson areas
were stocked March 23 with channel catfish (start of spring catfish season) and we stocked hybrid sunfish the last week of March. Green Valley Lake in Payson was stocked with trout on March 22.
Next Stocking: All Phoenix and Tucson Urban Program lakes will be stocked with channel catfish on the week of April 2-7. Green Valley Lake in Pason will be stocked with trout the week of April 2-7.
