Lake Erie bag limits likely to remain same

Mike MooreIt's nice to have some good news for a change to report on Lake Erie.

Amid the reports of Asian carp and the like, we now get news that bag limits on the big lake likely won’t change for 2012.

Be sure to get all of the news in contributing writer John Hageman’s story in the April 13 edition of Ohio Outdoor News.

I have to admit that I’ve been among the hand-wringing masses that thought this year’s bag limit would likely be reduced.

I’m happy to report that this is not the case. Ohio didn’t catch as many walleyes as expected last year, so the Total Allowable Catch as prescribed by the Great Lakes Fishery Commission puts Ohio in a position to maintain bag limits.

Still, the fishery is not all in the clear. We still need a successful spring hatch to maintain current levels. What this spring’s incredibly warm spring will do for the hatch is anyone’s guess.

Let’s just keep our fingers crossed.
