PA: Looks like steelhead runs are starting near Erie Issue: 21

NORTHWEST REGION

Lake Erie – As conditions allowed, perch were hitting in 58 to 62
feet of water Sept. 30. Depending on flow in the creeks, steelhead
up to 13 pounds were being landed in the lower reaches near the
shoreline.

Presque Isle Bay (Erie County) – Steelhead were beginning to show
up around Sept. 30. Anglers were boating crappies, including some
10 to 12 inchers, in Marina Bay. Perch, crappies and bass were
hitting from the North Pier, and crappies from the East and West
piers. An angler released a northern pike in Horseshoe Pond.

Allegheny Reservoir, Allegheny River (Warren County) – Walleyes up
to 26 inches, a few muskies, some northern pike, and numbers of
smallmouth and white bass were reported in the river in late
September. Walleyes and a few northern pike and perch were caught
in the lake.

Caldwell Creek (Warren County) – A state trout stocking was slated
for Oct. 3.

Kahle Lake (Clarion County) – A nice bluegill bite was
reported.

Beaver Creek Ponds (Clarion County) – Some bluegills and small bass
were reported in this series of small impoundments. Try
worms.

Allegheny River (Venango County) – Floating weeds were becoming a
problem. Smallmouth bass up to 17 inches were reported. A couple of
nice walleyes were caught on creek minnows. Rob Genter and Kit
Pascarell, of Tidioute, won a recent Fraternal Order of Police
Lodge No. 50 team tournament with five bass totaling almost 14½
pounds. They also caught the 4-plus pound lunker.

Oil, Little Sandy creeks (Venango County) – State trout stockings
were slated for Oct. 4.

French Creek (Venango, Crawford counties) – Walleyes up to 20
inches were hitting on jigs in the early morning. A few largemouth
bass from 2 to 4 pounds were reported, caught on
spinnerbaits.

Woodcock Creek (Crawford County) – A state trout stocking was
slated for Oct. 3.

Cussawago Creek (Crawford County) – Bluegills were reported on this
French Creek tributary in recent weeks.

Conneaut Lake (Crawford County) – Nice bass and bluegills were
reported.

Pymatuning Reservoir (Crawford County) – Walleyes were hitting,
mostly on blade baits. The late-night bite along the channel was
productive for some anglers. Crappies, bluegills, and yellow perch
also were reported. Anglers caught smallmouth and largemouth bass
up to 18 inches on crankbaits, buzzbaits, flukes and spinnerbaits.
Catfish were hitting around the causeway in the evenings.

Lake Wilhelm (Mercer County) – Bluegills and a few crappies were
hitting from boat and shore, with the Sheakleyville Bridge area
productive, but bass and walleyes were slow.

Lake Arthur (Butler County) – Walleyes were picking up, along with
hybrid striped bass in the evenings. Largemouth bass and channel
catfish were hitting. Numbers of small to average-size crappies
also were reported, caught on minnows.

Buffalo Creek, Harbar Acres Lake (Butler County) – State trout
stockings were slated for Oct. 4 and 5.

Piney Creek (Clarion County) – A state trout stocking was slated
for Oct. 4.

East Hickory, Salmon creeks (Forest County) – State trout stockings
were slated for Oct. 4.

Clear, North Fork Redbank creeks (Jefferson County) – State trout
stockings were slated for Oct. 7.

Cascade Quarry, Neshannock, Slippery Rock creeks (Lawrence County)
– State trout stockings were slated for Oct. 4.

Cool Spring Creek, Shenango River (Mercer County) – State trout
stockings were slated for Oct. 3.

SOUTHWEST REGION

Allegheny River (Allegheny County) – The Venture Outdoors’ Downtown
TriAnglers caught smallmouth bass up to 15 inches, channel catfish
up to 23½ inches, flathead catfish up to 18 inches, and a 9-plus
inch skipjack herring from the North Shore Sept. 28. Walleyes were
hitting around the Hulton Bridge, with minnow-tipped jigs
productive. Smallmouth bass and channel catfish were reported
around various locks and dams, caught on bait.

Ohio River (Allegheny County) – Flathead catfish up to 25 pounds
were reported around Kilbuck at night, and muskies were in the back
channel of Neville Island.

Deer lakes (upper, lower, middle), Deer, Pine creeks, Montour Run,
(Allegheny County) – State trout stockings were slated for Oct. 4
and 5.

Loyalhanna Lake (Westmoreland County) – Shore anglers were catching
largemouth bass and perch.

Conemaugh River (Westmoreland, Indiana, Cambria counties) - Nice
catches of smallmouth bass were reported, along with a couple of
sublegal tiger muskies.

Donegal, Indian, Keystone, Mammoth, Northmoreland, upper and lower
Twin lakes, and Indian Creek and Loyalhanna creeks (Westmoreland
County) – State trout stockings were slated for Oct. 4, 5, and
6.

Green Lick Dam (Fayette County) – An angler boated a 22-inch
walleye trolling on this 101-acre reservoir.

Dunbar Creek, Dunlap Creek, Virgin Run lakes, Meadow Run (Fayette
County) – State trout stockings were slated for Oct. 6 and 7.

Laurel Hill Creek, Laurel Hill Lake (Somerset County) – State trout
stockings were slated for Oct. 5.

Allegheny River (Armstrong County) – Smallmouth bass were reported
on shiners. A 40-plus inch muskie was reported around
Kittanning.

Buffalo Creek (Armstrong County) – A state trout stocking was
slated for Oct. 5.

Raccoon Lake (Beaver County) – A state trout stocking was slated
for Oct. 5.

Cross Creek Lake (Washington County) – Bluegills were the main
catch, with jigs and maggots or ants and maggots productive.
Crappie fishing was picking up in recent weeks. The largemouth bass
bite, however, has remained slow.

Chartiers Creek, Canonsburg Dam, Dutch Fork Lake, Millers Run
(Washington County) – State trout stockings were slated for Oct. 3,
4, and 5.

Chest Creek (Cambria County) – A state trout stocking was slated
for Oct. 3.

Lake Rowena (Cambria County) – A state trout stocking was slated
for Oct. 6.

Little Mahoning Creek (Indiana County) – A state trout stocking was
slated for Oct. 7.

NORTHCENTRAL REGION

Kinzua, Marvin, West Branch Tunungwant creeks (McKean County) –
State trout stockings were slated for Oct. 4.

Letterkenny Reservoir (Franklin County) – A state trout stocking
was slated for Oct. 7.

Kettle Creek Lake (Clinton County) – A state trout stocking is
slated for Oct. 14.

Janesville Dam, Sandy Lick Creek, West Branch Susquehanna River
(Clearfield County) – State trout stockings were slated for Oct.
12.

Spring Creek (Centre County) – High but fishable flow was reported
on this limestone stream recently. Hatches included a few
blue-winged olives, which should improve through fall. Tricos were
ending. Terrestrials were still catching fish, along with the Tan
Caddis pattern.

Black Moshannon Creek (Centre County) – A state trout stocking was
slated for Oct. 3.

Poe Lake (Centre County) – A state trout stocking was slated for
Oct. 6.

Hamilton Lake, Pine Creek (Tioga County) – State trout stockings
were slated for Oct. 14.

East Licking Creek (Mifflin County) – A state trout stocking was
slated for Oct. 5.

Kyle Lake (Jefferson County) – Crappies were hitting in deeper
water near the breast of the dam on this 165-acre impoundment, with
small plastic jigs productive. Smaller bass were hitting on
weightless plastic crawlers and wacky rigs.

Susquehanna River (Clinton, Lycoming counties) – The bass bite
picked up on crawlers and minnows in falling water
temperatures.

Rose Valley Lake (Lycoming County) – Perch and nice numbers of
largemouth bass were reported on this 389-acre impoundment.

Pine, Little Pine, Loyalsock, Lycoming, Muncy creeks, Little Pine
Lake (Lycoming County) – State trout stockings were slated for Oct.
3 and 4.

West Branch Susquehanna River (Lycoming County) – The smallmouth
bass bite was picking up in late September.

Driftwood Branch Sinnemahoning Creek, George B. Stevenson Reservoir
(Cameron County) – State trout stockings were slated for Oct.
14.

Big Mill Creek, East Branch, West Branch Clarion River, Laurel Run
Reservoir (Elk County) – State trout stockings were slated for Oct.
4.

White Deer Creek, Halfway lake (Union County) – State trout
stockings were slated for Oct. 3.

Allegheny River, Kettle, First Fork Sinnemahoning creeks, Lyman Run
Reservoir (Potter County) – State trout stockings were slated for
Oct. 5.

SOUTHCENTRAL REGION

Greenwood Lake (Huntingdon County) – A state trout stocking was
slated for Oct. 4.

Cowans Gap Lake (Fulton County) – A state trout stocking was slated
for Oct. 7.

Green Spring Creek (Cumberland County) – A state trout stocking was
slated for Oct. 7.

Conewago Creek (Adams County) – A state trout stocking was slated
for Oct. 5.

Canoe Creek Lake, Little Juniata River (Blair County) – State trout
stockings were slated for Oct. 3.

East Licking Creek (Juniata County) – A state trout stocking was
slated for Oct. 5.

Little Buffalo Lake, Middle Creek (Perry County) – State trout
stockings were slated for Oct. 3 and 5.

NORTHEAST REGION

Broadhead, Bushkill, McMichael, Tobyhanna creeks, Lehigh River
(Monroe County) – State trout stockings were slated for Oct.
7.

Mountain Lake (Bradford County) – A state trout stocking was slated
for Oct. 5.

North Branch Susquehanna River (Bradford County) – As conditions
allowed, smallmouth bass were biting upstream of the Sayre Fish
& Boat Commission launch, with tube jigs productive in fast
water. Bass also were hitting on twister tails at the 187 Wysox
access.

Lake Wallenpaupack (Pike County) – A good smallmouth bass bite was
reported Sept. 30, with deep-running crankbaits, tubes, and herring
productive in 15 to 20 feet of water. Lower water temperatures made
striped bass more active on live herrings drifted at dusk. Pickerel
were hitting on live bait.

Shohola Lake (Pike County) – Anglers were catching nice numbers of
bass up to 4 pounds on live bait. Panfish were hitting
mealworms.

Peck’s Pond (Pike County) – Bass were hitting Texas-rigged soft
plastic crawlers, and pickerel were hitting wacky-rigged plastic
crawlers. Panfish were becoming active on mealworms.

Bushkill, Dingmans creeks, Lackawaxen River (Pike County) – State
trout stockings were slated for Oct. 10 and 11.

Mud Run, Pohopoco creeks (Carbon County) – State trout stockings
were slated for Oct. 6.

Mauch Chunk Lake (Carbon County) – The beach near the campgrounds
was yielding bluegills and crappies in late September. Bass were
hitting on minnows all over the lake, including coves and fishing
piers. In the weeds near the second boat launch, catfishing was
productive on chicken livers, with 15-inch and larger fish
reported.

Beltzville Lake (Carbon County) – Good yields of panfish were
reported, with nice-size perch and bluegills hitting on jigs and
plastic minnows.

Lehigh River (Lackawanna County) – A state trout stocking was
slated for Oct. 7.

Delaware River – Numbers of bass and a few walleyes were reported,
with spinnerbaits the best bet and tubes taking less active bass.
Bass were hitting in faster water.

Minsi Lake (Northampton County) – Yields on perch, crappies and
bluegills were good. A state trout stocking was slated for Oct.
11.

Bowman, South Branch Tunkhannock creeks (Wyoming Creek) – State
trout stockings were slated for Oct. 3.

Briar Creek Lake (Columbia County) – A state trout stocking was
slated for Oct. 7.

Lackawanna, Merli-Sarnoski Park lakes, Roaring Brook, South Fork
Tunkhannock Creek (Lackawanna counties) – State trout stockings
were slated for Oct. 4.

Bowman, South Branch Tunkhannock creeks (Wyoming County) – State
trout stockings were slated for Oct. 4.

Harveys, Lily, Moon, Sylvan lakes, Lake Irena, Nescopeck Creek
(Luzerne County) – State trout stockings were slated for Oct. 4 and
6.

Harveys Creek, Lake Took a While, (Luzerne County) - A state trout
stocking was slated for Oct. 12.

Dyberry Creek (Wayne County) – A state trout stocking was slated
for Oct. 7.

Hunters Lake (Sullivan County) – A state trout stocking was slated
for Oct. 5.

SOUTHEAST REGION

Little Lehigh River (Lehigh County) – Trout fishing was productive,
particularly through the parkway, with crawlers, fathead minnows
and PowerBait effective, and caddisflies productive for
fly-anglers. A state trout stocking was slated for Oct. 7.

East Branch Perkiomen Creek, Levittown Lake (Bucks County) – A
state trout stocking was slated for Oct. 4.

Chambers Lake (Chester County) – Panfish were hitting from boat and
shore, with anglers drifting along the shoreline making the best
catches. Shore anglers also were doing well on grubs, small
redworms, or chunks of night crawler fished about 3 feet under a
bobber.

Schuylkill River (Schuylkill County) – Bass were becoming more
active in falling water temperatures, with topwater baits
productive from evening through dark, in darker colors. White and
blue spinnerbaits worked well during daylight hours.

Locust Lake (Schuylkill County) – Bass were hitting on minnows,
jitterbugs, and buzzbaits along the shoreline in the evenings.
Trout also were reported near shore.

Little Schuylkill River, Tuscarora Lake (Schuylkill County) – State
trout stockings were slated for Oct. 5.

Hay Creek, Scotts Run Lake (Berks County) – A state trout stocking
was slated for Oct. 6.

Manatawny Creek (Berks County) – A state trout stocking was slated
for Oct. 3.

Tulpehocken Creek (Berks County) - A state trout stocking was
slated for Oct. 7.

East Branch Brandywine, Pickering creeks (Chester County) – State
trout stockings were slated for Oct. 3.

Middle Branch White Clay Creek (Chester County) – A state trout
stocking was slated for Oct. 12.

Muddy Creek (York County) – A state trout stocking was slated for
Oct. 12.

Clark, Manada, Wisconisco creek (Dauphin County) - State trout
stockings were slated for Oct. 13.

Chester, Ridley creeks (Delaware County) – State trout stockings
were slated for Oct. 6.

West Branch Octoraro Creek, Muddy Run Recreation Lake (Lancaster
County) – State trout stockings were slated for Oct. 12.

Quittapahilla Creek (Lebanon County) – A state trout stocking was
slated for Oct. 13.

Pennypack, Wissahickon creeks (Philadelphia County) – State trout
stockings were slated for Oct. 13.

Bushkill Creek (Northampton County) – A state trout stocking was
slated for Oct. 11.
