U.S. Forest Service may eliminate BWCA lottery system

I’m not a massive fan of the U.S. Forest Service lottery system
for obtaining a Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness permits, but
it’s worked pretty well for me the past couple of years. If you
have your act together, and know what entry point you wanted when
the lottery period opened, you’d get your permit. Still, applying
for backups was a hassle, and what the USFS is pitching in this
letter sounds easier overall. That said, “opening day” January 25
will be pretty chaotic as every canoist and his brother dials the
call center to obtain permits at popular entry points. I hope I’m
wrong. We’ll sniff into this further and provide more information
in the print editon of Outdoor News as the story develops.
