AR: Annual Buffalo River Elk Festival begins June 24

JASPER – Anxious elk hunters will be focused on northern
Arkansas and the popular Buffalo River Elk Festival this weekend.
The festival is scheduled to begin Friday, June 24, and continue
through Saturday, June 25. The award-winning festival began in 1998
to celebrate the successful reintroduction of elk to Newton County,
and has been an annual event since.

The highlight of the festival is the Arkansas Game and Fish
Commission’s drawing for elk hunting permits. The drawings and most
of the activities will be at the Newton County Courthouse square in
Jasper, with a kids’ fishing derby on the banks of the Little
Buffalo River.

The drawing for the public land permits will be each hour
Saturday, starting at noon. People who applied for permits don’t
have to be present, but many attend each year.

The AGFC and Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation will present several
educational programs.
