University of Minnesota DVD helps Hmong enjoy the outdoors

Minneapolis, MN (AP) – The University of Minnesota has helped
produce a DVD to teach Hmong immigrants more about how to hunt,
fish and enjoy the outdoors.

“Yos Hav Zoov” was written, acted, produced and directed by
Hmong Minnesotans and is being distributed for free at community
events this spring and summer.

The DVD uses a variety-show format with Hmong actors to teach
about everything from using public lands to gun safety and which
wild plants are safe. Smokey Bear even shows up to talk about fire
prevention, in Hmong.

The project was led by Michele Schermann, a research fellow at
the university. It received funding from the U.S. Forest
Service.

Schermann says it was clear from her talks with immigrants that
they wanted to enjoy the outdoors, but didn’t always know the
rules.
