PA: Ice fishing is holding up well with frigid temps Issue: 4

Ice fishing continued into early February, and anglers were
reminded to exercise extreme caution when venturing onto frozen
surfaces. Some Fish & Boat Commission’s stockings were
rescheduled because of extreme weather forecasts. Those and the
remaining winter stockings are at www.fishandboat.com.

NORTHWEST REGION

Presque Isle Bay of Lake Erie (Erie County) – Ice fishing picked up
in early February in the head of the bay, between the third and
fourth parking lots and “the stink hole” with nice perch, numbers
of bluegills and some crappies reported.

East Basin, West Basin ponds (Erie County) – State trout stockings
were slated for Feb. 3.

Allegheny Reservoir, Allegheny River (Warren County) – Walleye
catches and releases of trout were reported in the river in recent
days. Anglers were icing walleyes, perch and northern pike in the
reservoir.

Chapman Reservoir (Warren County) – Ice anglers were catching
recently-stocked trout in early February.

Chautauqua Lake (New York) – Ice anglers were catching crappies,
bluegills, perch, and evening walleyes on minnow-tipped jigs,

Conneaut Lake (Crawford County) – Winners of the recent Van
Tassel’s Timberland Bait ice-fishing tournament were Terry Miller,
of Union City, with a 471⁄2-inch, 251⁄2-pound muskie; Travis Dieter
,of Fairview, with a 36¼-inch, 11-pound, 12-ounce northern pike;
Aaron Schilling, of Harmonsburg, with a 12½-inch perch; and Jason
Archer, of Titusville, with a 85⁄8-inch crappie.

Pymatuning Reservoir (Crawford County) – Walleyes up to 28 inches,
crappies up to 14 inches, perch, and bluegills were reported.

Lake Wilhelm (Mercer County) – Bluegills and crappies were iced,
with about half the catches keeper-size. A couple of walleyes were
iced off Launch No. 3 earlier this month.

Cloe Lake (Jefferson County) - A state trout stocking was performed
Feb. 4.

SOUTHWEST REGION

Lake Arthur (Butler County) – Anglers were icing numbers of
bluegills, and a few crappies, largemouth bass and northern pike. A
4½-pound largemouth bass was released.

Harbor Acres Lake (Butler County) – Catches of recently-stocked
trout continued through the ice earlier in early February.

Glade Run Lake (Butler County) – A few trout and crappies were iced
through early February. A state trout stocking is slated for Feb.
16.

Raccoon Lake (Beaver County) – A slow bite was reported, with just
a few panfish iced. A state trout stocking was slated for Feb.
16.

Hereford Manor lakes (Beaver County) – The lower lake was yielding
nice largemouth bass on tip-ups tipped with shiners. The upper lake
was slower, with a few bluegills and crappies reported on
waxworms.

Keystone Lake (Armstrong County) – A state trout stocking was
slated for Feb 7.

Northmoreland Lake (Westmore-land County) – A state trout stocking
was slated for Feb. 7.

Donegal Lake, Mammoth Lake (Westmoreland County) – State trout
stockings were slated for Feb. 15.

Upper and Lower Twin lakes (Westmoreland County) – State trout
stockings were set for Feb. 16.

Laurel Hill Lake (Somerset County) – A state trout stocking was
slated for Feb. 8.

Youghiogheny River (Fayette County) – The tailrace of the
Youghiogheny Dam was slated for a state trout stocking Feb.
8.

Canonsburg Dam (Washington County) - A state trout stocking was
slated for Feb. 16.

Glendale Lake (Cambria County) – Northern pike and pickerel were
iced in recent days. Panfish were hitting in the evening.

Lake Rowena (Cambria County) – The Traditional Anglers of Pa.
scheduled a stocking for Feb. 13. A state troutb stocking was
slated for Feb. 15.

Deep Creek Lake (Maryland) – Anglers were icing perch, northern
pike, and pickerel, try minnows.

NORTHCENTRAL REGION

Bradford City No. 3 Reservoir (McKean County) – A state trout
stocking was slated for Feb. 22.

George B. Stevenson Reservoir (Cameron County) – A state trout
stocking was slated for Feb. 8.

Kettle Creek Lake (Clinton County) - A state trout stocking was
slated for Feb. 8.

Rose Valley Lake (Lycoming County) – Crappies and perch were iced
on minnows through early February.

Little Pine Lake (Lycoming County) – Ice fishing was slow in the
early part of February. A state trout stocking was slated for Feb.
22.

Black Moshannon Lake (Centre County) – Ice anglers were catching
pickerel on tip-ups with fathead minnows and shiners through the
end of January, with weedbeds the most productive spots. Reports of
bluegills and perch and some black crappies on waxworm-tipped
jigs.

Foster Joseph Sayers Dam (Centre County) – Anglers were icing black
crappies and perch on spoons and minnow-tipped jigs.

Beechwood, Hamilton lakes (Tioga County) – State trout stockings
were slated for Feb. 10.

Lyman Run Reservoir (Potter County) – A state trout stocking is
slated for Feb. 23.

SOUTHCENTRAL REGION

Laurel Lake (Cumberland County) – Trout were hitting through the
ice in early February.

Lake Marburg (York County) – Anglers were icing crappies, yellow
perch and bluegills in early morning and evening in early
February.

Canoe Creek Lake (Blair County) - A state trout stocking was slated
for Feb. 15.

Cowans Gap Lake (Fulton County) - A state trout stocking was
performed Feb. 3.

NORTHEAST REGION

Mauch Chunk Lake (Carbon County) - Ice anglers were catching
pickerel on minnows in early February. A few largemouth bass up to
17 inches also were reported on minnows off Boat Launch B. Perch
fishing was overall slow but anglers reported some up to 13 inches
on minnows.

Beltzville Lake (Carbon County) - The Preachers Camp boat access
area was yielding pickerel 24 to 28 inches on minnows, and a few
walleyes and crappies. Panfishing was productive, with most catches
coming on small jigs tipped with waxworms. A few perch 12 to 13
inches were reported off the Pine Run boat access area.

Shohola Lake (Pike County) - Conrad Walton, of Allentown, iced
nice-size pickerel and perch and numbers of bluegills in early
February.

Lehigh River – A few anglers were targeting trout in the water
below Cementon Falls in early February, but few good catches were
reported.

Lackawanna Lake (Lackawanna County) – Numbers of bluegills were
hitting through the ice on jigs and waxworms or small pinhead
minnows. Some largemouth bass and nice-size pickerel were iced on
tip-ups in Bullhead Bay. A state trout stocking was slated for Feb.
3.

Lily Lake, Lake Irena (Luzerne County) – Nice catches of panfish
were iced at both lakes, with jigs tipped with waxworms productive.
Pickerels were hitting on fathead minnows or shiners. State trout
stockings were slated for Irena on Feb. 8 and Lily on Feb. 9.

Lake Took-A-While (Luzerne County) – A state trout stocking was
slated for Feb. 8.

Moon Lake (Luzerne County) – A state trout stocking was slated for
Feb. 8.

Lower Woods Pond, Long Pond, Miller Pond, Prompton Dam, White Oak
Pond (Wayne County) – Ice anglers were catching pickerel in early
February, with large minnows the ticket. Perch and crappies were
active.

Briar Creek Lake (Columbia County) – A state trout-stocking was
slated for Feb. 9.

Hidden Lake (Monroe County) – A state trout stocking was slated for
Feb. 9.

Hunters Lake (Sullivan County) – A state trout stocking was slated
for Feb. 22.

Quaker Lake (Susquehanna County) – A state trout stocking was
slated for Feb. 23.

SOUTHEAST REGION

Lake Towhee (Bucks County) – Ice anglers were pulling out nice-size
pickerel and largemouth bass up to 2 pounds. Numbers of bluegills
and some crappies also were reported.

Nockamixon Lake (Bucks County) - Ice quality varied through early
February, with patches of thin ice reported. Anglers stuck to the
back coves, and Haycock and Three Mile arms, as well as the fishing
and marina piers. Catches were small to average with muskies up to
22 inches and walleyes reported.

Levittown Lake, Lake Luxembourg (Bucks County) - Ice anglers were
fishing with bright-colored jigs tipped with mealworms or small
marshmallows and live minnows in early February. The 20-acre
Levittown can yield largemouth bass, bluegills, perch, and
trout.

Coatesville Reservoir (Chester County) – Ice anglers reported
panfish on the eastern shore about 150 yards south of the dam, with
tip-ups set in 12 to 15 feet, and mealworms suspended about 2 feet
off the bottom productive.

Struble Reservoir (Chester County) – An angler iced a 4-pound
channel catfish at this 286-acre reservoir in early February. The
fish hit in about 11 feet in the center of the lake, on a medium
shiner on a tip-up set near the bottom.
