Bear Kill by OH Deer Hunter Declared Self Defense

Cadiz, Ohio – A Massillon man who shot a black bear in November
won’t face charges, prosecutors say.

The Harrison County Prosecutor’s Office has declined to charge
the unnamed individual, saying he apparently acted in self
defense.

The hunter killed the bear Nov. 29 on opening day of the deer
firearms season. The slug struck the bear in the head, killing it
instantly.

Prosecutors said that based on the trajectory of the single
shot, the individual acted in self defense.

Hunting bears in Ohio is illegal; they are a protected
species.

“It appears to be a situation where the bear was running through
the woods … It (shot) indicated the bear was coming right toward
him,” assistant county prosecutor Michael Washington told The
Repository of Canton. “It was a straight on shot to the head.”
