Calif. scientists studying mammoth tusk in Vegas

LAS VEGAS (AP) – Crews from the San Bernardino County Museum in
California are giving local elected officials a glimpse at the tusk
of a Colombian mammoth being unearthed at a Las Vegas nature
preserve.

Museum officials planned a ceremony Thursday at the Tule Springs
site where a tip of the 7-foot tusk was found poking from the
ground earlier this year.

The site is near the base of the Sheep Mountains on the
northwestern outskirts of the Las Vegas sprawl.

Conservationists have campaigned for years to make Tule Springs
a national park. They say more than 10,000 fossils dating back at
least two Ice Ages have been unearthed in the area.

Lynn David of the National Parks Conservation Association says
the latest discovery shows the importance of protecting Tule
Springs from private development.
