Greenville, Maine (AP) – The first week of Maine’s three-part
moose hunting season has ended.

The six-day hunt in northern Maine districts ended at dusk
Saturday. There are no figures yet on the total number of moose
taken.

The next week of hunting runs Oct. 12-17, also in northern
districts. Then, from Nov. 2-28 moose hunting permit holders will
be assigned to select districts in southern Maine.

State wildlife biologists estimate Maine’s moose population at
29,000. For the 2008 season, the success rate for hunters was 74
percent as hunters killed 2,241 moose out of a possible 3,015
permits issued.
