SC spear fisherman: Fla. boats take too many fish

Charleston, S.C. (AP) – Some South Carolina fishermen say spear
fishermen from Florida are exploiting the rules when they take
thousands of pounds of game fish from the state’s artificial
reefs.

The South Carolina fishermen say two or three boats per year
come north and spend a couple of weeks diving at the state’s 52
reefs, looking for flounder, scamp and big grouper.

The Department of Natural Resources told The Charleston Post and
Courier that the practice isn’t against the law, but it doesn’t
seem fair since the reefs were set up to help inexperienced weekend
fisherman

But wildlife officials say they will talk to South Atlantic
Marine Fisheries Council about the practice. The group makes the
rules for fishing off the Atlantic off Florida, Georgia and the
Carolinas.
