DEC offering free fishing events

Albany – DEC will be conducting free fishing events across the
state as part of a push to highlight New York’s outstanding fishing
opportunities.

“New York state is among the nation’s premier, year-round
fishing destinations, and to help newcomers or those interested in
learning how to fish (DEC) has scheduled free fishing events in
communities across the state,” department officials said in a
statement. “These events are in addition to the state’s annual free
fishing weekend being held on June 27 and 28.”

DEC_Commissioner Pete Grannis said the events are being held
“because our staff and partners truly enjoy introducing people to a
new and popular pastime in some of the best places for fishing. We
hope that anglers – new and old – take advantage of these fun
learning opportunities being held across the state.”

DEC’s regional offices sponsor clinics to help teach adults and
children the basics of fishing. Participants are often supplied
with equipment and learn about fish identification, fishing
equipment and techniques, fisheries management, angling ethics and
aquatic ecology. A freshwater fishing license is not required at
the events.

Some events have already been held. A list of regional free
fishing events can be found at: http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/27123.html

DEC also designates the last full weekend in June – June 27-28
this year – each year as a free fishing weekend, which enables all
residents and visitors to fish New York state waters without a DEC
freshwater fishing license. Permits from the New York City
Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) may still be
required to fish in the New York City watershed. Information on how
to obtain a permit can be found at
http://nyc.gov/html/dep/html/watershed_protection/recrea-tion.shtml

on the NYCDEP Web site.

While a DEC fishing license is not required for either the free
fishing weekend or regional free fishing events, DEC’s other
fishing regulations remain in effect.
