Anglers beware: Salmon rules enforced in CA valley

Fresno, Calif. (AP) – Anglers beware: California officials are
enforcing new recreational salmon fishing regulations throughout
the Central Valley basin.

Starting this week, the Department of Fish and Game says
catch-and-release fishing that intentionally targets salmon is
illegal in any river or stream that’s closed to salmon fishing.

Fisheries officials say the new rules will increase protection
for declining Sacramento River fall run Chinook populations.

Violators could face fines of up to $1,000.

The new rule makes a small exception: fishermen on a small
portion of the Sacramento River can bag one salmon from Nov. 16 to
Dec. 31.
